Maybe it was because he won math awards as a kid; maybe it was because his father was an accountant with his own practice. Whatever the reason, Kal Barson always knew that he was destined to work with numbers, and has worked in accounting for over 40 years.

Kal is a Certified Public Accountant who is very experienced in forensic/investigative accounting and funds flow tracing, as well as in business valuations — for divorce cases, and for gifting and estates.

In 2002, Barson founded The Barson Group, a New Jersey accounting firm specializing in litigation support services, financial investigations, and business valuations. While the Barson Group handles a substantial number of traditional accounting and tax clients, its major focus is working with clients, their attorneys, and the judicial system on financial-based litigation.

Before founding his firm with his wife Janet, he worked for 27 years for a mid-size accounting firm, the last five years as managing partner. Barson helped grow that firm from 10 to 55 people, as he became a nationally-recognized expert in investigative accounting and business valuation, responsible for over 1,000 litigation matters.

He has testified numerous times in court and in depositions and has been accepted as a financial expert in most counties in New Jersey, as well as in New York and Pennsylvania. He assists attorneys and their clients in all phases of litigation – including the investigation of finances and businesses, strategizing, and financial planning/consulting.

He says that it makes sense to get a divorce using the Collaborative Practice. “Both partners are our clients. When both sides work together, the whole family benefits. It does wonders for the children if you can tamp down and control the vitriol. When both parties are reasonable, it’s a lifesaver. It improves life both currently and after the divorce.”

Barson has authored several texts and over 100 articles on investigative accounting and business valuations.
